UFC Fight Night – Royval vs. Taira October 12th 2024 Preview.
The UFC Vegas 98 fight card takes place Saturday, October 12. The UFC Apex in Las Vegas hosts the UFC Fight Night event, which is headlined by a flyweight bout between a recent UFC flyweight title challenger and an unbeaten rising star in the promotion’s 125-pound weight division. That scrap sees Brandon Royval opposite Tatsuro Taira. Royval enters the fast-approaching UFC Vegas 98 fight card as the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC flyweight rankings. The 32-year-old is coming off a February split-decision victory over two-time UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno. The 24-year-old Taira is ranked No. 5 in the UFC’s 125-pound weight class. He is coming off a June TKO win over former UFC flyweight title challenger Alex Perez. The entire UFC Vegas 98 fight card streams on ESPN+ with prelims beginning at 4 p.m. ET. The main card has a start time of 7 p.m. ET.
Brandon Royval (16-7) joined the UFC in 2020 with a 10-4 record. At the time, Royval was coming off a November 2019 submission win over Nate Williams, earning him the LFA flyweight title. Royval did not get an easy matchup in his first UFC bout, as he was booked against former UFC flyweight title challenger Tim Elliott in a slight upset. The matchup won “Fight of the Night” honors. Taira opened as the -195 betting favorite. He has surged to -315 as fight night approaches. Royval had an opening betting line of +150. Today, he is listed at +210. Royval lands an average of 4.33 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy of 36 percent. His striking defense is 46 percent, and he absorbs 3.42 significant strikes per minute. Royval lands 0.47 takedowns per 15 minutes with an accuracy of 60 percent. His takedown defense is 40 percent. Taira lands 65 percent of his attempted strikes and averages 3.56 landed blows per minute. His striking defense rate is 47 percent, and he absorbs 1.70 significant strikes per minute. Taira picks up 2.35 takedowns per 15 minutes on a success rate of 47 percent. His takedown defense is 62 percent. Taira looks the part of an elite flyweight, but he is largely untested, and he is facing one of the best competitors in the 125-pound weight division on Saturday. With the odds being what they are, the betting pick is for Royval to win via decision.
Tatsuro Taira is looking every bit the superstar and it is not just the fact that he has won all of his fights, but the manner in which he is doing it. Three of his last five fights have seen him pick up Performance of the Night bonuses and this bout is yet another test he will expect to rise to. Royval is a quality operator and at another time, he would surely have been flyweight champion had it not bene for Alexandre Pantoja. A win here keeps him right in the mix. A loss will see Taira leapfrog him in the pecking order and hamper his negotiations for a new deal. There’s always a degree of urgency and desperation for fighters when their contracts are up and we like that. This is a tough assignment though for Royval. Taira is highly skilled and has a real energy about him. We fancy the Japanese star to keep the momentum and get the win here. This could very well go the distance and we see Taira getting that decision, but either way, expect this fight to be a thriller.
