UFC 317 Topuria vs Oliveira PPV Pay Per View June 28th 2025 Preview.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues its 2025 pay-per-view (PPV) schedule on Sat., June 28, 2025, with a championship doubleheader headlining UFC 317 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as part of International Fight Week. In UFC 317’s PPV main event, former Featherweight champion, Ilia Topuria, challenges ex-Lightweight titleholder, Charles Oliveira, for Islam Makhachev’s vacated 155-pound title in a high-stakes, five-round showdown. UFC 317’s PPV co-main event features Flyweight kingpin, Alexandre Pantoja, defending his 125-pound belt against No. 4-seeded contender, Kai Kara-France, in an electrifying five-round rematch. UFC 317 will also showcase a Lightweight bout between Beneil Dariush vs. Renato Moicano, as well as a short-notice Flyweight clash pitting Brandon Royval vs. Joshua Van, and much more! UFC 317’s start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET (“Early Prelims”), 8 p.m. ET (“Prelims” undercard), and 10 p.m. ET (PPV main card).

The Charlie Olives fan club has been spouting things like “there are weight classes for a reason” in regard to Ilia Topuria’s jump to the higher division, and that’s true. But I think we have to make an important distinction when comparing opponents. Charles Oliveira also fought in the featherweight division — for several years — and is now resting comfortably at lightweight where he belongs. That’s a lot different than a fighter like Islam Makhachev, who is probably better served at welterweight but cuts down (sometime controversially) in order to run the table at 155 pounds. Point being, don’t expect Oliveira to have a significant advantage in strength or punching power when the cage door closes on Saturday night. Brandon Royval comes into UFC 317 as the slight betting underdog, probably because bookies like shiny new toys. “Raw Dog” joined the UFC roster back in early 2020 and in 10 fights inside the Octagon, has only lost to two fighters: current flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja and former 125-pound titleholder Brandon Moreno — and he later avenged his loss to the “Assassin Baby.” Royval also ended the undefeated run of flyweight prospect Tatsuro Taira and choked out UFC 317 co-headliner Kai Kara-France, so it should come as no surprise that Royval is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.

Joshua Van is the new kid on the 125-pound block and exactly what the division needs — a fresh face. “Fearless” steps in for the injured Manel Kape, who is about as reliable as a chocolate teapot. Van joined UFC when he was just 20 years old and has quickly amassed a 7-1 record though he’s only notched two finishes during that span. Maybe that sounds like nitpicking and perhaps it is, but also keep in mind that Van is facing the top-ranked flyweight in the promotion, so details matter. In addition, his biggest win to date has come over the 35 year-old Bruno Silva, who was also smashed by Manel Kape at UFC Tampa. Without seeing “Fearless” perform against a Top 5 flyweight like Kai Kara-France or Amir Albazi, it feels premature to pick him over a fighter with Royval’s experience. Royval will enjoy significant advantages in both height and reach. At age 32, “Raw Dog” is competing in his fighting prime. At just 23, Van is not. He certainly has the opportunity to make a run for the 125-pound strap somewhere down the road, I just think the Royval fight — while admirable for its short-notice booking — is a case of too much, too soon.

Payton Talbott was a hot young prospect wrecking shop for Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat promotion and quickly earned himself a UFC contract with a breakout performance on Dana White’s “Contender Series” back in summer 2023. The promotion didn’t waste much time getting Talbott entrenched in the bantamweight division and the Nevadan went right to work, racking up three straight victories with three exciting finishes. Naturally, it helped that Talbott was facing the cream of the crap. Nick Aguirre and Yanis Ghemmouri both went 0-2 for UFC and got the boot while Cameron Saaiman is mired in a three-fight losing streak. Talbott’s first real test came against veteran banger Raoni Barcelos and the unranked, 37 year-old Brazilian captured a fairly convincing decision. And by “fairly convincing” I mean Talbott got his ass kicked. I know the cool kids like to play fast and loose with the term “fraud check” but I think this was just a case of an undefeated prospect who believed he was invincible and had no Plan B when the shit hit the fan.

Felipe Lima started his combat sports career with a submission loss to Ivan Luiz back in summer 2015, when the Brazilian was just 17 years old. Since then, “Jungle Boy” has rattled off 14 straight wins, including two under the UFC banner. His debut at UFC Saudi Arabia ended with a submission victory over Muhammadjon Naimov, which he parlayed into a decision win over longtime veteran Miles Johns at UFC Tampa. Against Talbott, Lima will give up four inches in height and two inches in reach — but so did Barcelos. The bookies have Lima at -190 on the moneyline against +160 for Talbott. They’re part of the UFC 317 PPV card because matchmakers are expecting this to be an exciting, slam-bang fight worthy of one or more post-fight performance bonuses. How well Talbott performs may depend on what lessons he learned from his Barcelos loss. Some fighters dismiss a losing performance as just a bad day at the office and return to their regularly scheduled programming — only to find themselves back in the “L” column. Regardless, I think Lima is the faster, more complete fighter and will pick up right where Barcelos left off.
